Of Canadian nationality, he was raised in a Christian household by his parents, Tim Parsons and Laurie Thibert. Information about siblings is not publicly available.
Parsons pursued higher education at Lethbridge College, graduating from the welding program in 2010, where he developed the fabrication and problem-solving skills that would later prove essential to his career.
Before his accident, he worked as a metal fabricator at KB Heating and Air Conditioning in Lethbridge while racing cars and riding dirt bikes in his spare time.
Career
Robert Parsons began racing cars about a decade before his accident, competing in drifting and riding dirt bikes and motocross.
On 5 June 2011, while riding at Temple Hill Motorcross Park in Raymond, Alberta, he came up short on a step-up jump, breaking both legs and severing his spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.
During six months of hospitalization and recovery, he conceived the idea of building a hand-controlled drift car, refusing to accept that his racing days were over.
He drew up a plan and concept for a car he could operate entirely with his hands while still in his hospital bed.
After returning home, Parsons spent over eighteen months building an adaptive 600-horsepower drift machine from a 1991 Nissan 180SX, designing a unique hand-control system that allows him to steer, accelerate, brake, shift gears, and operate the clutch using only his hands.
He founded the Chairslayer Foundation in 2015 to help others with disabilities experience motorsport, and that same year was named a Rising Star by Lethbridge College.
In 2019, he partnered with Lyfe Motorsport to become the first person to compete in the World Time Attack series using only hand controls, driving a 1200-horsepower Nissan GT-R and finishing sixth in his category.
He also became the first wheelchair-bound driver to compete in the USA and appeared in Ken Block’s Hoonigan crew.
In his later career, Parsons has continued to expand both his racing and philanthropic work.
He made his inaugural appearance at the 98th Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2020, becoming the first driver with paraplegia to race the course since 1988.
His Chairslayer Foundation conducts driving clinics, outreach programs, and motivational speaking events for people with disabilities, and he has been developing more hand-controlled cars to expand access to motorsport.
His influence has made him a respected figure in adaptive motorsport and an inspiration to countless individuals facing similar challenges.
