Judith Susan Sheindlin, the esteemed Judge Judy, was born into a Jewish family in the bustling metropolis of Brooklyn, New York, on October 21, 1942. Her father, Murray Blum, was a dentist, while her mother, Ethel Blum, was a homemaker. She has a brother named David Blum.

The Blums were descendants of immigrants from Brest Litovsk, Belarus (now Brest, Belarus), and Judge Judy has often spoken fondly of her familial heritage. 

Judy Sheindlin was a precocious student, graduating from James Madison High School in 1960 before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in government from American University in 1963.
