Phillip Calvin McGraw (born September 1st, 1950), better known as Dr. Phil, is a veritable prodigy in the world of media. With his sharp wit and charm, he has established himself as a leading American television personality, as well as a published author.

Early Life & Education

Phil McGraw was born and raised in Vinita, Oklahoma, United States, on September 1st, 1950. Born in a family of three, he has two older sisters named Donna McGraw and Deana McGraw. He also has a younger sister named Brenda McGraw. He is the only male in his family.

His father, an oil supplier in the oilfield of North Texas, is called Joe McGraw. On the other hand, his mother, Jerry McGraw, is a housewife. Phil McGraw had it rough while growing up. At the age of 13, he started working at n A&W Root Beer stand and a local chain called Pizza Planet in Oklahoma City.

Dr. Phil relocated from Oklahoma to Kansas with his father. In Kansas, his father continued his lifelong goal of becoming a psychologist. He also completed his high school education in Kansas. He attended Shawnee Mission North High School in Overland Park, Kansas.

He participated actively in high school sports. He was the linebacker for his school football team in 1968. He was so good that he earned a football scholarship to the University of Tulsa. He later transferred to Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. He graduated in 1975 from Midwestern State University with a B.A. in psychology. 

Later, Phil McGraw obtained his M.A., a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and an M.A. in experimental psychology; both earned in 1976. His thesis, Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Psychological Intervention, was completed in 1979 at North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas).

Personal Life

Phil McGraw married his wife in 1970 when he was just 20. His first wife was called Debbie Higgins. However, the couple went their separate ways a few years after their union.

According to Debbie Higgins McCall, Dr. Phil was a domineering man who wouldn’t let her do the things she liked. She also accused Phil McGraw of infidelity. The couple finalized their divorce in 1973.

During the wedding annulments, Phil McGraw was in a relationship with another woman named Robin McGraw. He and Robin McGraw courted for three years before getting married in 1976.

Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw have two children together. Their first child was named Jay McGraw, and the second child was named Jordan McGraw.

Career

After obtaining his doctoral degree, Phil McGraw reconnected with his father in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he established his psychological practice. In 1985, Thelma Box, a shrewd Texan businesswoman, joined forces with Dr. Phil and his father to offer Pathways self-help workshops. In October 1991, six years after joining forces with Thelma Box, he sold his stake in the company for a handsome sum of $325,000.

Together with attorney Gary Dobbs, Phil McGraw co-founded Courtroom Sciences, Inc. (CSI) in 1990. CSI is a renowned trial consulting firm that provides services such as depositions, jury selection, and witness preparation in U.S. litigation psychology. The company has rendered its expertise to numerous corporations, prominent attorneys, and even some of the world’s major airlines. 

Although Dr. Phil is no longer an officer or director of CSI, the popular television show Bull is based on his experience as a trial consultant. He is credited as one of the series’ creators. Through CSI, he also had the opportunity to collaborate with Oprah Winfrey.

In 1995, Oprah Winfrey enlisted the services of Phil McGraw‘s legal firm, CSI, to aid her in the impending Amarillo, Texas, beef trial. After the trial, Oprah Winfrey was so enchanted by Phil McGraw‘s assistance that she invited him to appear on her show. His segment was met with great acclaim, and he began making regular weekly appearances as a relationship and life strategy advisor.

In September 2002, Phil McGraw established Peteski Productions and debuted his television program, Dr. Phil, which Oprah Winfrey‘s Harpo Studios produced.

In 2012, Phil McGraw launched Doctor On Demand, an online platform that allows individuals to schedule virtual consultations with a network of healthcare professionals. In 2014, the company introduced a web and mobile service.
