Carl Jung was born on July 26, 1875, in Kesswil, Switzerland, to pastor Paul Achilles Jung and Emilie Preiswerk, from a family with strong spiritual and occult interests. He had one younger sister. His ethnicity was Swiss-German. Raised in a Protestant household, he experienced visions and mystical dreams from childhood.

He studied medicine at the University of Basel (1895–1900), specializing in psychiatry, and earned his medical degree in 1902 with a dissertation on the psychology of occult phenomena.

Career

Jung worked at the Burghölzli psychiatric hospital under Eugen Bleuler (1900–1909), developing the word association test. Initially Freud’s chosen successor, he broke away in 1913 after publishing Psychology of the Unconscious.

He founded analytical psychology and wrote seminal works including Psychological Types (1921), The Red Book (published 2009), Memories, Dreams, Reflections (1963), and Man and His Symbols (1964). His ideas influenced psychiatry, anthropology, literature, and religion worldwide.
