Early Life & Education

Luis Díaz, a member of the Wayuu indigenous community, was born in Barrancas, La Guajira, Colombia, on January 13, 1997. His passion for football started at the young age of six, with his father, Luis Manuel Díaz, taking up the role as his first coach. 

Growing up in a supportive family environment, Luis Díaz was also surrounded by his mother, Cilenis Marulanda, and two siblings named Roger David Diaz and Jësüs Manuel Díaz. 

As he pursued his education, Luis Díaz obtained his undergraduate and medical degrees from the prestigious University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine.

Career

Luis Díaz embarked on his soccer journey with Barranquilla in the Colombian Second Division before moving to Atlético Junior, where he tasted victory in the Categoría Primera A, securing a Copa Colombia and Superliga Colombiana. 

In 2019, he joined Porto for €7 million, achieving success in Portugal with doubles in Primeira Liga and Taça de Portugal and a Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira triumph.

Liverpool beckoned Díaz in January 2022 for €45 million, where Luis Díaz‘s debut match in February ended in a victorious 3-1 against Cardiff City. In April, he scored his first Liverpool goal against Manchester United, sealing a 2-0 win. His debut season was filled with triumphs in EFL and FA Cups, culminating in a standout FA Cup final performance.

Luis Díaz‘s international chapter is equally impressive, with 39 appearances and eight goals for Colombia. The 2021 Copa América saw him win the Golden Boot alongside Lionel Messi as Colombia secured third place.

On August 19, 2023, Luis Díaz, Mohamed Salah, and Diogo Jota orchestrated a 3-1 victory. Still, the match was marred by injuries to Luis Díaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold and a red card for Alexis Mac Allister.

Luis Díaz and Gera Ponce have been in a romantic relationship since 2016, and their love for one another has only grown stronger over time. Their delight was just compounded by the birth of their first child, a lovely daughter called Roma Diaz, on November 5, 2021.
