Early Life

Katie Nicholl was born in Buckinghamshire, UK, and attended a small private school for girls. She has two brothers. She was born in 1978. At 12 years old, she competed in national diving championships and became the county under-16 champion. 

During her teenage years, Katie Nicholl spent a lot of time with friends from school, but she never allowed herself to be distracted from school work by parties or dating – which is unusual as teenagers are usually preoccupied with boyfriends at that age. 

Katie Nicholl also worked part-time during her teen years, caddying on weekends at golf courses in Little Marlow (this was before women’s golf had become popular). She later caddied full-time after moving out of home at 18 and supported herself by working as a caddy until she moved overseas aged 19.

Career

After working for a local newspaper and television station in Australia, Katie Nicholl moved to Britain and worked as an associate producer for Channel 4 News before joining Sky News as a producer and presenter. 

She then joined ITN as a news correspondent for ITV News, where she spent five years covering major stories around the world, including wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, presidential elections in America, and natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. 

In 2009, she became a chief foreign correspondent at The Mail on Sunday, where she still works, writing news stories about world events. 

Katie Nicholl is also one of two rotating guest presenters on Channel 5’s Breakfast show Sunrise every Monday through Friday alongside her husband, Dan Walker, who is also her colleague at The Mail on Sunday, who works as editor of their award-winning sports section. 

Katie Nicholl was previously a Premier League football commentator for BBC Radio Five Live. She has been nominated twice by TV BAFTA (British Academy Television Awards) for Newcomer of the Year in 2005 and again in 2010 when she won it. 

Other awards bodies have also recognized her work, including winning Interviewer of the Year from Women in Film & Television UK twice, once in 2007 and again in 2010.
