Early Life

Hon. Nwifuru was born on February 25, 1975, in his hometown of Oferekpe Agbaja, Izzi Local Government Area, Ebonyi State,

The well-known Chief and Mrs. Nwifuru Nwamkpu family raised him in a polygamous household. Chief Uzoamaka Nwifuru is the spouse of Hon. Nwifuru.

There are five kids in the family. In 1991, Hon. Nwifuru enrolled in Oferekpe Agbaja Community Primary School.

In 1999, due to his continuing dedication to learning, he transferred to Community Secondary School, Nwofe Agbaja.

His academic endeavors were sometimes challenging. He only occasionally went to school and helped his brothers care for their father’s many livestock.

However, his devoted mother, Okweru, was instrumental in ensuring his son received the necessary Western education. He completed his secondary schooling in pure brilliance by May/June 2004.

After completing his post-primary schooling, Ogbonna, now known as “Francis,” who had been baptized—the sacrament of entry into the Catholic faith—started a new chapter in his life.

By then, he had moved away from his birth parents to live with Chief (Hon.) Boniface U. Ofoke was a man who had spent his entire life teaching, investing in, and training others. He had also been a pioneer in promoting Western education.

Hon. Nwifuru enrolled at Ebonyi State University in Abakaliki to pursue a woodworking and building technology degree.

Since then, he has established himself as a leading expert in construction technology and woodworking thanks to his skill and brilliance in the trade.

Career

His first attempt at politics came in 2007 when he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly representing his state constituency.

Later, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) named him an ex-officio state executive member for Ebonyi State.

He tried again in March 2011 and was elected to the Ebonyi State House of Assembly to represent the Izzi West Constituency.

He also became the House Committee on Lands, Survey, Urban Development, and Environment Chairman and Deputy Chief Whip during that time.

He was re-elected in 2015, becoming the Assembly’s fifth Speaker. He was also re-elected in 2019 for the same posts, making him the only Ebonyi State House of Assembly member to serve as Speaker twice.

He was chosen in 2020 to serve as the National Vice Chairman of Nigeria’s South East Conference of State Legislatures. Nwifuru received 199,131 votes total from the 13 local governments in the state to win the election as the All Progressives Congress’s candidate for governor of Ebonyi in 2023.

Controversy

In March 2016, rumors were that the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had detained the governor-elect.

He, though, refuted the charge. Nwifuru clarified that he just attended the EFCC’s South-East zonal office in Enugu upon invitation.
