During court proceedings, WhatsApp messages were presented as evidence, revealing that Obeta had charged Ike Ekweremadu a total of 4.5 million naira (equivalent to about £8,000) for an “agent fee” and a “donor fee.” Ike Ekweremadu and Obeta acknowledged providing false information by claiming that the man was Sonia‘s cousin in his visa application and hospital documents.

According to Davies, Ike Ekweremadu deliberately ignored medical advice to seek a donor from genuine family members for his daughter, instead opting to pay for the procedure from a pool of donors. He stated that there was never any intention to involve a family member, regardless of their proximity or relationship with the family.
