London Nicole Breed (born August 11, 1974) is a distinguished American politician presently serving as the 45th mayor of the City and County of San Francisco. 

Prior to her current mayoral position, she demonstrated her dedication as a supervisor for District 5. London Breed‘s notable achievements include being elected as the president of the Board of Supervisors from 2015 to 2018.

London Breed, a renowned political figure, was born in San Francisco, California, on August 11, 1974. Comelia Brown, her grandmother, raised her in Plaza East public housing in the city’s Western Addition neighborhood. 

Breed has stated that her childhood was “tough” and that she “saw a lot of violence.” She has also said that her strong and independent grandmother inspired her. 

Born to immigrant parents, London Breed‘s mother hails from India, while her father is Jamaican. Her family includes two siblings, with her brother, Napoleon Brown, currently serving a 44-year sentence for a 2000 manslaughter and armed robbery conviction. Additionally, her younger sister tragically passed away in 2006 due to a drug overdose.

London Breed received a degree from the University of California with honors. She graduated with honors from San Francisco’s Galileo High School. After high school, she enrolled in UC Davis and joined the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha. 

Career

London Breed‘s political career began in 2012 when she was elected to the District 5 seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. As a result of her colleagues’ acknowledgment of her leadership talents, she was chosen president of the Board of Directors in 2015. 

After Mayor Ed Lee died unexpectedly in December 2017, Breed became interim mayor. She was elected mayor in a special election in January 2018 due to the public’s admiration for her dedication and outstanding leadership throughout that time.

London Breed‘s historic victory as San Francisco’s mayor represents a significant turning point because it makes her the first African-American woman to hold the office. Breed is also the second black woman to hold the mayor’s office in the city’s annals, following in the footsteps of trailblazers like Willie Brown and Dianne Feinstein.
