Early Life

Yahaya Bello Adoza was born on June 18, 1975, in Agassa, Okene Local Government Area, Kogi State, to Alhaji Bello Ipemida Ochi and Hajia Hawa Bello Oziohu. He is the sixth and final child of six children and a Kogi State native.

In 1984, he started his elementary education at LGEA Primary School in Agassa, Okene LGA. He then went to Anyava, Agassa-Okene’s Agassa Community Secondary School.

But he did not stop there with his secondary education. He attended several schools before graduating from Suleja-Niger State’s Government Secondary School.

Bello continued to take his ‘A’ level exams at Kaduna State Polytechnic in Zaria in 1995 and was accepted to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria in 1996 to study accounting. In 1999, he earned a degree in accounting.

Yahaya graduated from ABU, Zaria, with a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) in 2004. He holds a chartered fellow designation from the ANAN, the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria.

Career

After serving his NYSC year, he was hired by the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), where he worked in 2002. He started as a Revenue Officer but was soon elevated to Accountant.

He then got the job of Assistant Chief Accountant before leaving the commission. Before the stock market crash, Alhaji Yahaya Bello achieved financial success after eventually learning the stock trading strategy.

His stock portfolio includes transportation, financial, oil and gas, and agricultural companies. Then, he expanded and added to his real estate holdings, spreading them over several states in the union.

He holds the positions of managing director of FairPlus International Limited and chairman of the Kogi Youth Arise Forum.

He founded the Kogi Youth Arise Group with other politically astute young people to launch his political career.

The group backed Buhari and Osinbajo’s presidential campaigns in the past election. The group also mobilized young people throughout the State’s 239 wards in support of President Buhari.

He announced his intention to run for governor in the 2015 election on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, garnering the enthusiastic backing of young people around the State who wanted one of their own to steer Kogi towards a better future.

On December 6, 2015, Yahaya Bello succeeded the deceased previous APC candidate, Abubakar Audu, whose passing on November 22 rendered the Kogi State governor’s contest inconclusive.

He was sworn in as the governor of Kogi State on January 27, 2016.

In April, Yahaya Bello, the governor of Kogi State, publicly announced that he would be running for president in 2023.

In his speech, Governor Bello vowed to uphold President Muhammadu Buhari‘s legacy by bringing wealth to 20 million citizens by 2030.

Despite finishing second in the primary election, Bello asserted that the lessons learned from the contest had been successfully internalized and would be useful in future political endeavors.
