His father, Jess, previously played professional baseball as a pitcher in the minor leagues and independent leagues during the 1990s. His older sister, Jadan, went on to play collegiate golf at San Jose State University, while his younger sister, Kendra, participated in volleyball and water polo.
Growing up in a family with varied sporting interests gave Gonzalez an environment in which athletic competition was familiar.
Gonzalez attended Glendora High School in California, where he distinguished himself in both baseball and football. He was a four-year varsity letterman in both sports and played quarterback for the school’s football team.
During his high school football career, he recorded 4,487 passing yards and 62 touchdowns, earning recognition at the league and Southern Section levels.
He also demonstrated considerable ability on the baseball field, finishing his high school career with a .390 batting average.
