Nollywood Mourns as Ogogo Loses Battle With Cancer Days After Fake Death Rumor
Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known by his stage name Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after a battle with stage four cancer.

He passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026, reportedly at around 3:00 p.m., following weeks of declining health.
His daughter, Kira Taiwo, announced the death in an emotional Instagram Live session, breaking down in tears as she informed viewers that her father had died.
The announcement sent shockwaves through the Nigerian entertainment industry and triggered an outpouring of grief from colleagues, fans and well-wishers across the country.
His death came just days after a false report of his passing had circulated on social media, a claim that was later disproved before his actual death was confirmed.
Ogogo’s passing followed a public appeal made by his family in the weeks before his death. His daughters had disclosed that he was battling stage four cancer and called for urgent medical assistance, explaining that the family had only become fully aware of the severity of his condition roughly three weeks before making the appeal.
The family stressed at the time that their priority was securing appropriate medical care rather than financial donations, and that they were searching for a hospital or specialist equipped to handle his treatment.
The appeal drew significant attention, with veteran actor Jide Kosoko later revealing that the family and Ogogo’s colleagues had received hundreds of offers of help, ranging from medical to spiritual assistance. He noted that the sheer volume of offers made it difficult to determine which ones were credible, a challenge compounded by the fact that Ogogo remained hospitalised and in a condition that made relocating him difficult.
Among those who stepped in to help was Ogun State governorship aspirant Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Senator Yayi, who was reported to have facilitated efforts to secure specialist medical care for the actor. Actress Toyosi Adesanya had earlier said that Adeola personally reached out to cancer specialists on Ogogo’s behalf and that the actor had subsequently been admitted for treatment.
Born Taiwo Hassan, Ogogo built a career spanning about four decades and became one of the most recognisable faces in Yoruba-language Nollywood cinema. He was widely admired for his distinctive acting style and memorable performances, and his work extended beyond traditional Yoruba productions into major contemporary Nigerian films, including Aníkúlápó, which introduced him to a wider audience.
According to a burial announcement shared by Jide Kosoko, Ogogo is set to be buried on Monday, August 24, in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, in keeping with Islamic rites. His daughter Kira had earlier been heard on a livestream instructing that her flight to Nigeria be booked so she would not miss the burial.
News of his death has drawn tributes from across the Nigerian film industry, along with condolence messages on social media. A platform associated with Islamic cleric Sheikh Al-Fulanny shared a message describing his passing with the Islamic phrase “Innalillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un,” praying for his admission into paradise.
Fans and colleagues have continued to share memories of his career and extend condolences to his family as details of the funeral arrangements are finalised.
