Senate Minority Leader, Senator Patrick Abba Moro, is mourning an unimaginable double tragedy following the death of his grandson and his son within just 48 hours.

The heartbreaking events — both from separate fatal accidents — have cast a dark cloud over the Moro family in Benue State, drawing national sympathy from political leaders, colleagues, and citizens.

Senator Moro, 65, represents Benue South Senatorial District under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Born on August 3, 1960, in Ukwonyo-Icho, Oju LGA of Benue State, he is known for his long-standing service in public administration.

He holds a B.Sc. in Business Administration from the University of Lagos (1985), an M.Sc. in Public Administration from the University of Jos (1991), and a Ph.D. in Public Administration from the University of Abuja (2006).

His career includes roles as Chairman of Oju LGA (1998), Benue State Commissioner for Finance (1999–2007), and Deputy Governor under Gabriel Suswam (2007–2015). Elected to the Senate in 2015, he has chaired key committees and is widely recognized for his advocacy for youth empowerment, education, and regional development. Since 2023, he has served as the Senate Minority Leader and has been a vocal critic of the APC government.

The cascade of grief began with the death of his teenage grandson, Abba Moro Jr., earlier in the week. Details remain private, but reports indicate he died in an accident and was quietly buried in their hometown of Ukwonyo-Icho, in line with Idoma customs. Known lovingly as “Junior,” he was remembered as a bright, energetic child who loved football and academics.

Barely a day after the burial, tragedy struck again on October 18, 2025. Senator Moro’s 28-year-old son, Victor Abba Moro, died in a ghastly car crash along the Mararaba axis of the Keffi-Abuja highway in Nasarawa State.

Victor, the fourth of six children of the senator and his wife, Mrs. Veronica Adah Moro, had just returned to Nigeria after completing a degree in International Relations in Ankara, Turkey. He was preparing to register for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

According to eyewitnesses and preliminary police reports, Victor was driving a black Toyota Corolla when it collided head-on with a speeding articulated truck transporting construction materials. The accident, believed to have been caused by brake failure and excessive speed, resulted in Victor’s instant death due to severe head and chest injuries. The truck driver, Ibrahim Yusuf, was arrested at the scene with minor injuries. The crash also caused major traffic congestion along the busy highway.

Victor’s body was released from the Mararaba General Hospital morgue on October 19, while the family continued to mourn both losses ahead of funeral rites scheduled for October 25 in Ukwonyo-Icho. The ceremonies are expected to blend Christian services with Idoma traditional rites.

Senator Moro’s wife, Veronica — a devoted mother and educator — is said to be heartbroken. Their other five children, including a doctor based in Lagos, have returned home to support the family. The Moro residence has turned into a center of mourning, filled with relatives, friends, and community members dressed in black Ankara fabrics.

Tributes have poured in from across Nigeria’s political landscape. Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom described the losses as “a moment of deep pain and sorrow.” In contrast, former Senate President Bukola Saraki wrote on X: “To lose a grandson and then a son days apart is a pain no family should endure.” PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Senators Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Ned Nwoko, and other political figures have also offered condolences and support.

As the family grieves, many Nigerians reflect on the fragility of life and the urgent need for improved road safety in the country. Those close to Senator Moro say he remains “shattered yet strong,” relying on faith, family, and community to endure the unimaginable loss.
