2027 Power Play: Atiku Abubakar’s Moves in PDP’s Chess Game

Posted By Kaptain Kush

In the intricate dance of political maneuvering, former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar reportedly gears up for the 2027 race while simultaneously navigating the internal dynamics of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The current intrigue focuses on the position of the party’s acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, who is at the center of a power struggle within the PDP.

Atiku and his loyalists are purportedly uncomfortable with Damagum, accusing him of allegiance to the G-5 axis of the party, notably led by the influential Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Despite various political tactics, including attempts to forcibly reinstate the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the efforts to dislodge Damagum have faced hurdles.

One significant factor contributing to Damagum‘s resilience is the backing he enjoys from key figures, including Wike, the G-5 faction, and members of the PDP Governors Forum. The Forum, under the leadership of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who harbors presidential aspirations for 2027, plays a crucial role in shaping the party’s internal dynamics.

To counter the perceived influence of Wike and the G-5, Atiku and certain party leaders are rallying behind the suspended National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu. The strategy involves supporting Ayu in his legal battle for reinstatement, even though he may be hesitant to return to office.

The ongoing cold war within the party and the unresolved court case have created a challenging atmosphere for potential leaders. Notably, former President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has reportedly hesitated to take on the role of the national chairman, expressing reluctance to preside over a party divided by internal strife.

As the PDP navigates this complex political landscape, the looming court case and power struggles underscore the delicate balance within the party as it approaches the crucial 2027 elections. The choices made in the coming months will likely shape the trajectory of the PDP and its role in Nigeria’s political landscape.
