Lao Chew Yen (born February 13th, 1979), addressed as Jesseca Liu, is a Malaysian-Singaporean actress and model. She has worked in the entertainment industry for over 18 years and is recognized globally for her remarkable roles.

Jesseca Liu, who is currently based in Singapore, came into the industry in 2004 and has gone on to appear in several blockbuster movies.

Two years after her advent to the industry, she was named one of the Seven Princesses of Mediacorp in 2006. In addition to her acting career, she is a musician with three studio albums.

Jesseca Liu won Best Supporting Award in 2005 for her works in Portrait of Home. In the same year, she also won the Best Newcomer Award.

Early Life & Education

Jesseca Liu, also known and identified by her birth Lao Chew Yen was born in Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia, on February 13th, 1979, to Chinese-Malaysian parents. She has an older brother and a younger sister.

She migrated with her parents from Malaysia to Singapore at a tender age. Her Chinese Hanyu Pinyi is Liú zi xuàn. When she relocated to Singapore, she changed her name to Jesseca due to pronunciation difficulties.

Jesseca Liu is a wonderful personality. She can speak Cantonese, Hokkien, Mandarin, and English fluently. Regarding her education, she graduated from Saito Academy in 2001.

On July 16th, 2017, Jesseca Liu got married to the love of her life in a private wedding ceremony with just a few family and friends in attendance. Her husband is famously known as Jeremy Chan.

Career

In 2004, a producer at MediaCorp noticed Jesseca Liu and offered her the role of He Yi Xuan in the sports-themed drama titled The Champion, where she co-starred with Taiwanese stars Toro, Yan Xing Shu, and Qi Yuwu. Briefly, after the debut of the film, she then started a full-time acting career in Singapore.

In 2005, she landed a part in the drama series Portrait of Home, which had 100 episodes. Alongside experienced actors Adrian Pang and Louise Lee, she portrayed the role of a Vietnamese bride named Ruan Mianmian. With her performance as Ruan Mianmian in Portrait of Home, Jesseca Liu was nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Most Popular Newcomer Awards at the 2005 Star Awards event. That year, she won the Most Popular Newcomer Award.

She had her first leading role as Ding Yirou in Rhapsody in Blue in 2006. After that, Jesseca Liu was given a chance to take on leading roles. She worked on a MediaCorp Raintree Pictures movie in 2007 that was scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2008. 

However, copyright issues forced the movie’s screening to end. In December 2007, Jesseca Liu published the book diary Jesseca’s Diary. In May 2010, her agreement with MediaCorp came to an end. While running her family’s spa, she later secured a contract with HIM International Music (Singapore).

Her first project under her new firm was the 2010 Taiwanese film titled Lost and Found, broadcast on Channel U, starring James Wen and popular child star Xiao Xiao Bin.

Jesseca Liu renewed her contract with Mediacorp in 2015, making her eligible for the Top 20 Most Popular Female Artistes nominations. Her last nomination was in 2010. She starred in the drama series Yours Fatefully, Blessings, and Hand in Hand, all produced by Mediacorp.
