Samuel grew up in a creative household where cinema and music were important influences.
Samuel developed an interest in filmmaking during childhood and began making films at about eight years old. By the age of 13, he had obtained a Bolex 16mm camera and was already filming his own material.
After being expelled from his first secondary school, he spent an important period studying cinema independently at home, watching classic films and learning about directors and actors. His formal educational background is not publicly established.
Career
Jeymes Samuel began developing his career as both a filmmaker and musician. He later adopted the name The Bullitts for his musical work, releasing music that combined alternative hip-hop, soul, folk rock, electronic music, and cinematic influences.
In 2013, he released his debut album, They Die by Dawn & Other Short Stories, which was closely connected to his filmmaking ambitions.
His early filmmaking breakthrough came from the Western short film They Die by Dawn. Samuel wrote, directed, produced and also appeared in the project, which featured Michael K. Williams, Rosario Dawson, Erykah Badu, Jesse Williams and Giancarlo Esposito.
The film served as an early foundation for the larger Western story that eventually became The Harder They Fall.
In 2013, Samuel also became Executive Music Consultant on Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. His ability to combine music and visual storytelling continued to develop, and in 2017 he wrote and directed the short film Jay-Z: Legacy for Jay-Z’s 4:44 project.
Samuel reached a major career milestone in 2021 when he directed and co-wrote The Harder They Fall. The film starred Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Regina King, LaKeith Stanfield, Zazie Beetz and Delroy Lindo.
The Western placed Black historical figures at the center of a genre traditionally dominated by white characters and became Samuel’s feature-film directorial debut. He also contributed extensively to the film’s music.
The Harder They Fall brought Samuel considerable critical recognition. He won the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, as well as major honors from the African American Film Critics Association and Black Reel Awards.
Samuel followed the success of The Harder They Fall by writing, directing and producing The Book of Clarence. Released in 2023–2024, the biblical-inspired drama starred LaKeith Stanfield, Omar Sy, Anna Diop, David Oyelowo, Teyana Taylor and James McAvoy.
Samuel again handled the film’s music, reinforcing the close connection between his filmmaking and musical careers.
His subsequent projects have included further film development, including Irredeemable and the planned Streets of Rage adaptation. He was also invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2025, marking another significant recognition of his work in the film industry.
