Early Life & Education

Sista Afia, also known as Francisca Gawugah, was born on November 8, 1991, in Kumasi, Ghana, to Ms Perpetual Duncan-Williams and Mr Gawugah Eshun. Though initially from Swedru in Ghana’s Central Region, she grew up in Santasi, Fankyenebra, a Kumasi suburb in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, and spent her early years in Kumasi and Accra.

At the age of 15, she moved to the United Kingdom (UK) to pursue her studies and eventually earned a Masters’s (MSc) Degree in Nursing from Nottingham University. However, she decided to follow her passion for music. She returned to Ghana in 2015 to launch her career, gaining popularity with hit singles like Jeje featuring Shatta Wale and Slay Queen.

In addition to her music career, Sista Afia has ventured into entrepreneurship, opening a restaurant and shisha lounge in Accra. Her educational journey began at Reverend John Teye Memorial Institute in Accra, but due to her mother’s absence, she completed her schooling at Angel Educational Complex in Kumasi.

Career

Bisa Kdei, a Ghanaian Highlife performer, discovered Sista Afia in London (UK) after she was referred to him by her former manager (also in London). After studying nursing in the United Kingdom, the Jeje singer returned to Ghana in 2015 to launch her music career.

Bisa Kdei, a highlife performer, inspired and groomed her as a musician from the start of her career. She signed with BK Records and Ace Kandi Records. One of her earlier releases was an excellent collaboration with Bisa Kdei on Kro kro No, which Bisa Kdei wrote and composed.

Sista Afia rose to prominence in Ghana following her smash single Jeje, featuring African Dancehall King Shatta Wale. She first released a new rap song titled WMT (Wo Maame Tw3) on April 22nd, 2020, which was claimed to be a diss song to the likes of Sister Derby (Sister Deborah), Wendy Shay, or anyone else the music implicitly linked to.

On April 27th, 2020, Freda Rhymz responded to Sista Afia‘s WMT with a tune titled KMT (Komot), which also served as a diss song to Eno Barony.

Eno Barony later released her rap single, Rap Goddess, on May 1st, 2020, in response to both she and Freda Rhymz. She returned with a bang on May 5, 2020, with the release of You Got Nerves, which struck a chord with Eno Barony and Freda Rhymz.

She followed the surprise publication of Argument Done by Eno Barony on May 8th, 2020. Eno Barony‘s Issue Done, which was packed with hefty punchlines delivered to Medikal — who was rumoured to have ghost-written Sista Afia‘s You Got Nerves lyrics — certainly lived up to its billing by ultimately resolving the argument.

On May 11th, 2020, Freda Rhymz released Point Of Correction to address Sista Afia‘s You Got Nerves and Eno Barony‘s Argument Done. Following the release of Point Of Correction, Freda Rhymz and Sista Afia engaged in physical sparring on the premises of TV3 Network.

Sista Afia‘s romantic endeavours haven’t been smooth sailing, especially compared to her other female colleagues in the industry. The Jeje crooner was once in a committed relationship with a UK-based Ghanaian fella for 5 to 6 years, but the relationship turned sour, and her heart was left in shambles.

As per Sista Afia‘s account, she had to call it quits with her partner, who she started seeing way back when she was just 16 years old and residing in the Big Smoke due to his infidelity and aggression. The chap had a reputation as a ladies’ man and didn’t hesitate to flex his charm on other women.
