Toluwanimi Aluko (born 2003) is a rising Nigerian music star who is popularly known in the industry by the stage name Taves. He is a singer and songwriter famous in the Nigerian music scene because of his distinct music style. 

He came to the limelight after he dropped his debut single, Eleyele. Taves is topping the Afrobeats music charts because of his successful songs, Bodija and Folake.

Early Life

Taves, an up-and-coming musician, was born in 2003 to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Aluko. He was birthed in a private hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State. Eight days after his birth, a naming ceremony was held for young Taves‘ honor to commemorate his birth. At the naming ceremony, he was given the name Toluwanimi Aluko. Taves‘ name, “Toluwanimi,” is a Yoruba name that means “I Belong To God” in English. 

Taves is a Nigerian by birth and was born into an illustrious Yoruba family. He traces his Yoruba ancestry down to one of the Southwestern States in Nigeria. He was raised in Ibadan City and spent his formative years residing in Oyo State. Growing up, he was fondly called “Tolu” by his family members and close friends. 

Taves took to music when he was nine years old. At such a young age, he had begun singing songs. He started off by singing covers of popular songs he liked. By the time Taves was in high school, he had begun penning down his own original songs to the admiration of his schoolmates and teachers. He often performed his original songs at school events as a high school student.

Education

Taves underwent his elementary and secondary school education in Ibadan, Oyo State. He also attended a leading private nursery and primary school for six years. 

After graduating from elementary school, Taves‘ parents enrolled him in a top private secondary school where he studied for six years. He graduated high school in 2019, scoring good grades in his O’Levels.   

Career

Taves‘ journey to stardom kicked off in May 2022 with a cover of BNXN fka Buju‘s hit song, To Your Ears. Sharing his rendition on social media, the video spread like wildfire, attracting thousands of views and catching the attention of BNXN himself. Impressed by Taves‘ talent, Buju expressed interest in a future collaboration.

In April 2023, Taves made waves again with his cover of Lojay‘s Moto. The music video went viral, propelling Taves into the spotlight and earning him a performance slot at Lagos’s W-Bar. Responding to fan demand, Taves released his original single, Eleyele, in June 2023, paying homage to his hometown. The track quickly gained traction, establishing Taves as a rising star in the Nigerian music scene.

With Eleyele dominating the airwaves and music festivals, Taves cemented his presence in the industry. Invited to perform on Glitch Africa‘s live session, he continued to captivate audiences nationwide. In October 2023, Taves delighted fans with news of his collaboration with BNXN on the album Benson, featuring on the track Realize.

Keeping his promise to fans, Taves dropped the official music video for Eleyele in January 2024, teasing his upcoming single, Folake. Making guest appearances and gearing up for his release of Bodija in March 2024, Taves maintained momentum. True to form, Folake and Bodija received critical acclaim upon release, with both tracks enjoying significant airplay and streaming success across Nigeria.

Personal Life

Taves had a middle-class upbringing because his parents belonged to the middle class and worked hard to provide for his needs. Taves‘ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aluko, did their best to give the young artist a good moral upbringing. They taught him good morals and a sense of responsibility from a young age. Taves was raised a Christian and attended a Pentecostal Church alongside his parents. 

In 2022, Taves got the attention of BNXN fka Buju with his song, To You Ears (Cover). The single paved the way for Taves to secure a recording deal with To Your Ears Entertainment in 2023. After securing this music deal, he moved from his home city in Ibadan to Lagos City. He began living in a leased apartment in a highbrow estate in Lekki, Lagos State.
