Mark Angel (born 27 May 1991) is a humorous Nigerian comedian, scriptwriter, and video producer. 

He is prominent for the Mark Angel Comedy series of shots on social media, often featuring child comedians such as his cousin, Emmanuella, and his niece, Aunty Success Madubuike. His YouTube channel in 2017 became the first African comedy channel to hit one million subscribers.

Mark Angel‘s videos predominantly feature child comedians, mostly his niece, Emmanuella, and his sister, Aunty Success. A college dropout, he works as a professional cinematographer and co-owns a production house.

Early Life

Mark Angel was born in the city of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, South-South Nigeria. However, he originates from the Igbo tribe of Orlu, Imo State. He was born on the 27th of May in 1991.

He grew up in an average family with his two siblings: Aunty Success and one other. Mark Angel always had a dream of becoming a doctor. 

However, the path towards the actualization of his dream was cut short after his uncle’s sudden but unfortunate demise. He sponsored Mark Angel‘s education at the University, where he was studying medicine. 

Notwithstanding, he would go on to pursue another career in production instead.

Education 

Mark Angel completed his primary and secondary education at a local school in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, graduating with a Senior School Certificate (SSCE).

Then he attended Obafemi Awolowo University to study medicine as his major. After his uncle’s sudden demise, his family faced financial issues. Hence, Mark Angel decided to drop out.

Nonetheless, Mark Angel switched to studying courses in cinematography in India, which proved worthwhile.

Career 

Mark Angel began his journey to his career by learning photography. He next moved to India to gain some experience in cinematography and theatre. Following his return, he failed to find decent-paying jobs in the Nigerian film industry (Nollywood). Hence, he decided to go independent and eventually started his production house.

He created an online comic production company known as Mark Angel Comedy, a series of YouTube comedy shorts that feature a number of people from his family and neighbourhood in Port Harcourt. Many shots involve clever children, primarily his cousin, Emmanuella, and Aunty Success.

Mark Angel‘s first well-known shot is titled Oga Landlord, wherein a man late on rent (Mark) is trying to hide from his landlord (Daddy Humble) and tries in vain to have a child (Emmanuella) cover for him. The skit gave him much-needed popularity in Nigeria.

Emmanuella is Mark Angel‘s longest-appearing actress. She has won several comedy awards in Nigeria and Australia for her work with Mark Angel and is Africa’s youngest YouTube award winner. She started film work in school as part of a class video project before being chosen by Mark Angel for his stable of actors. Emmanuella‘s videos can reach up to a million views the first week after posting.

Mark Angel spotted her talent while Emmanuella was on a family holiday. He was searching for some child actors and thus turned to her. She proved her talent in an 18-hour-long video shoot. However, it was just a stunt that Mark Angel pulled to test the endurance of the young actor. Mark Angel then convinced Emmanuella‘s parents to let her become part of his channel.

Mark Angel Comedy earned a plaque from YouTube for reaching one million subscriptions in 2017, becoming the first Nigerian-based YouTube channel to reach such a threshold.

In 2018 it was announced that his principal actor, Emmanuella, would be attached to an upcoming Disney feature film. On 2 April 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdowns, Emmanuella, Aunty Success, and Regina Daniels were featured in a skit by Ofego titled Lockdown on his YouTube channel, using archive footage.

Besides creating content for his channel, Mark Angel also writes scripts for comedians. He also charges for it according to the script’s length and urgency. He primarily films in the lower-class neighbourhood in Port Harcourt, which is his way of showcasing the environment he grew up in. This also helps the common Nigerian people relate to his content.
