Early Life & Education

Jackson Mthembu was born on June 5, 1958, on Schoongezicht Farm in the Emalahleni district of Mpumalanga, South Africa. His upbringing and early education took place in the same province. 

Mama Rosie Nantoni Mthembu, his mother, was crucial in raising him. Jackson Mthembu has two siblings, Michael Mthembu and Mandla Mthembu. Despite being a public figure, he has maintained privacy regarding his father’s information, keeping his details undisclosed.

His educational journey commenced at Schoongezicht American Board Primary School, and he attended Kromkrans Farm School at some point. After completing his primary education, Jackson Mthembu proceeded to Elukhanyisweni Secondary School in Emalahleni, where he gained recognition for his leadership skills. 

He pursued higher education at the University of Fort Hare after high school. However, in 1980, he faced expulsion from the university due to his active opposition to apartheid policies.

Career

In 1976, Jackson Mthembu joined the African National Congress (ANC) and actively engaged in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. Despite his dedication, he faced multiple arrests and detentions by the apartheid government. After the end of apartheid, Mthembu entered the political arena and was elected to the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature in 1994. He served as the MEC for Transport from 1997 to 1999.

In 1999, Mthembu transitioned to the National Assembly of South Africa, gaining recognition for his role as the Whip of Parliament from 2009 to 2014. In 2014, his expertise led to his appointment as the national spokesperson for the ANC. 

In 2019, he assumed the position of Minister of the Presidency. Unfortunately, on January 21, 2021, at the age of 62, he succumbed to COVID-19. Jackson Mthembu, known for his eloquence and unwavering loyalty to the ANC, democracy, and liberty, was respected in South African politics. His passing was a significant loss for the nation, mourning the departure of a beloved public figure.

Personal Life

Jackson Mthembu was married to Thembi Mthembu and was a father to six children: three daughters, Thuli MthembuNokhwezi Mthembu, and Khabo Mthembu, and three sons. Tragically, their daughter, 25-year-old Nokhwezi Mthembu, took her own life on March 20, 2019, at their Pelican Park parliamentary village home in Cape Town. He was previously married to Pinkie Selolo.

The Mthembu family recently experienced another profound loss with the passing of Thembi MthembuArtwel Mthembu, a family spokesperson, announced her demise. Thembi Mthembu passed away on April 14, 2022, after battling illness for several weeks in a Pretoria medical facility. Described as a kind and loving person, her death is a significant blow to the six children left behind, including her firstborn daughter Nokhwezi, who tragically lost her life in 2019 in what is believed to have been a suicide at the politician’s Pelican Park home in Cape Town.
