Early Life & Education

Ace Magashule hails from Tumahole in the Orange Free State region of the Union of South Africa, born on November 3, 1959, falling under the Scorpio zodiac sign. 

His academic journey includes Tumahole Primary School, now Lembede Primary, and Phehellang High School in Tumahole, Parys. Recognized as “Ace” on the school soccer pitch, he later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Fort Hare. 

Ace Magashule commenced teaching at Moqhaka High School in Sebokeng and later returned to Phehellang. He actively participated in political organizations like the Congress of South African Students and the Tumahole Youth Congress in his youth. 

In 1982, while studying at Fort Hare, Magashule faced legal consequences after protesting against Ciskei Prime Minister Lennox Sebe‘s visit, leading to his arrest and conviction for committing an act of public violence.

Career

In the 1994 general election, Ace Magashule secured a seat in the Free State Provincial Legislature under the African National Congress (ANC). Concurrently, he joined the Free State Executive Council as an Executive Council for Economic Affairs member from 1994 to 1996. 

Magashule further solidified his standing within the ANC’s unified provincial branch by becoming Deputy Provincial Chairperson later that year, collaborating with Pat Matosa to advance the party’s interests. On May 6, 2009, he assumed the role of Premier of the Free State, succeeding Beatrice Marshoff. 

Initiating Operation Hlasela, a significant anti-poverty campaign, Ace Magashule also established a scholarship fund to support tertiary students in pursuing their academic aspirations during his tenure.
