Nancy Brinker, a Jewish woman, was born on December 6, 1946, in Peoria, Illinois. Her upbringing was within a family where her father, Marvin L. Goodman, worked as a commercial real estate developer, and her mother, Eleanor Goodman, dedicated herself to being a housewife. 

Nancy G. Brinker shared a strong bond with her older sister, Susan G. Komen. Tragically, Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1978 and eventually succumbed to the illness in 1980.

Nancy Brinker graduated from Lakewood High School in Lake Forest, Illinois, with her high school diploma in 1965. 

Career

Nancy G. Brinker gained valuable experience working with firms like Burson-Marsteller and Hill & Knowlton. However, her life took a tragic turn when her sister, Susan, succumbed to cancer at the young age of 36. This devastating loss ignited Brinker’s determination to combat the disease.

Nancy G. Brinker, 77, married her first husband, Robert Leitstein, in 1969. They had one son, Eric Brinker, together but divorced in 1978. In 1980, her younger sister, Susan G. Komen, died of breast cancer. Brinker was devastated by her sister’s death, leading her to start the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation in Susan’s memory. 

In 1984, Nancy G. Brinker married her second husband, Norman Brinker, a businessman and restaurateur. They remained married until he died in 2009.
