Early Life

Sisi Khampepe was born in Soweto, South Africa, on the 8th of January 1957. TheCityCeleb Editor’s Team could not ascertain details about her upbringing, siblings, and parents at the point of writing this post.

However, In 1980, she earned a B-Proc from the University of Zululand. In 1982, she earned her LLM from Harvard Law School in Boston, Massachusetts.

She was called to the bar in 1985 and worked in a private sector at Bowman Gilfillan, specializing in labor law. She was appointed to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1995. She also served as the National Prosecuting Authority’s Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions from 1999 to 2001.

Career

Sisi Khampepe began her legal career as a legal counselor at the Industrial Aid Society, where she worked from 1979 to 1980 on vacation. She was exposed to appalling working circumstances black people face in this country. Between 1981 to 1983, she worked as a lawyer at the Legal Resources Centre.

In 1983, she joined Bowman Gilfillan Attorneys as a Candidate Attorney. After being called to the bar in 1985, she started her law firm named SV Khampepe Attorneys. Her law firm was well-known for standing out for employees that subjected to penury and unfair laws by the labor sector. Hawkers, civic, and the Black Consumer Union were among the other human rights organizations she represented.

Sisi Khampepe‘s firm was one of the few black labor law firms in the country. She represented unions associated with both Nactu and Cosatu. 

Sisi Khampepe served as the national legal advisor for SACAWU. She also worked as a union money administrator for the FIET and the ICFTU. 

In 1995, late President Nelson Mandela appointed her as a TRC Commissioner, and the following year, she joined the TRC Amnesty Committee. From September 1998 until December 1999, she worked for the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development as the Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions.

Sisi Khampepe was appointed to the High Court as a judge in December 2000. Former President Thabo Mbeki also nominated her to lead the Commission of Enquiry investigating the mandate and location of the Directorate of Special Operations from April 2005 to February 2006. Erstwhile President Thabo Mbeki also appointed her to monitor Zimbabwe’s elections in 2004.

Don McKinnon, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, appointed her to the Commonwealth Observer Group for the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections in Uganda in February 2006.

From 2005 until April 2010, Sisi Khampepe served as Vice-Chairperson of the National Council of Correctional Services. She was appointed to the Constitutional Court as a judge in October 2009.
