Michael Fred Phelps II (born June 3, 1985) is an American former competitive swimmer and the most decorated Olympian of all time. He is regarded as the most successful swimmer in the sport’s history.

He also has the all-time record of 23 Olympic gold medals and has won the World Swimmer of the Year Award eight times.

He has also received the American Swimmer of the Year Award eleven times. He has won a total of 82 medals in major international long course competitions. Michael Phelps is also a humanitarian and founded the NGO Michael Phelps Foundation.

Early Life

The award-winning swimmer Michael Phelps was born to Michael Fred Phelps Sr. (father) and Deborah Sue Phelps (mother) on the 3rd of June 1985. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and was named after his father. 

He hails from a family of five and is the youngest child in the household. He has two older siblings: Whitney Phelps and Hilary Phelps. He was raised in the Rodgers Forge neighborhood in Towson. 

Before retiring, his father worked as a Maryland State Trooper while his mum was a middle school principal. By the time Michael Phelps turned nine, his parents had divorced. He has English, German, Scottish, Irish and Welsh ancestry.

Michael Phelps studied at Town High School, graduating with good grades in 2003. 

Thereafter, he joined the University Of Michigan to train and attend classes. However, he didn’t study for a degree. He was trained by a coach, Bob Bowman, who has been his instructor since he was eleven years old.

Since he appeared in his first international game, Michael Phelps has won 82 medals in major international long course competitions. He has won 65 gold medals, 14 silver medals, and three bronze medals across the Olympics, the World Championships, and the Pan-Pacific Championships. He is the long course world record holder in the men’s 400-meter individual medley. 

He is the former long course world record holder in the 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, 200-meter butterfly, and 200-meter individual medley.

Michael Phelps has won the American Swimmer Of The Year Award eleven times, the World Swimmer Of The Year Award eight times, and the FINA Swimmer Of The Year twice (2012 & 2016).
