Farewell to a Leader: Ondo Mourns Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s Passing

Posted By Kaptain Kush

The governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, has passed away at the age of 67 after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer. The Ondo State government confirmed the tragic news, stating that Akeredolu peacefully departed in Germany in the early hours of Wednesday.

Akeredolu, who had recently returned from a three-month medical leave in Germany, continued to lead the state from his home in Ibadan. President Bola Tinubu had directed him to transfer control to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, leading to the acting governor’s assumption of responsibilities.

The governor’s health challenges triggered concerns and calls for him to step down, particularly due to tensions with Aiyedatiwa. The Ondo State Assembly even initiated an impeachment process against the acting governor, but it was later suspended after a peace meeting mediated by President Tinubu.

Akeredolu, born on July 21, 1956, in Owo, Ondo State, had a distinguished career, serving as Attorney General of Ondo State, President of the Nigerian Bar Association, and winning two terms as governor. His legacy includes notable achievements in security, infrastructure, and the economy.

The Ondo State government expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Akeredolu‘s dedication to service and leadership in the state, the Southwest region, and the nation. The family and the state government expect to release details about funeral arrangements.
