Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (born February 12, 1982), popularly known as Bobi Wine, is a multifaceted Ugandan politician, singer, businessman, and actor. Formerly a Member of Parliament representing Kyadondo County East constituency in Wakiso District, situated in Uganda’s Central Region, he currently leads the National Unity Platform political party.

He has proven versatile, making a mark in Ugandan politics, music, acting, and business. Serving as a member of the Parliament of Uganda since 2017, he has actively participated in politics. 

As the leader of the People Power, Our Power movement, Bobi Wine has garnered a substantial following and become a vocal critic of President Yoweri Museveni. He is outspoken views and advocacy for change have gained widespread support among Ugandans who seek reform and progress.

Early Life & Education

Born on February 12, 1982, Bobi Wine is a prominent political figure in Uganda. Raised in Kamwokya, a bustling slum area in Kampala’s capital, his parents, Mzee J.W Sentamu and an unnamed mother, nurtured him during his formative years.

Growing up alongside his siblings, Mikie Wine and Eddy Yawe, Bobi Wine shared numerous experiences, fostering a strong bond throughout their childhood.

Bobi Wine pursued his education at Kololo Senior Secondary School and Kitante Hill School, earning his Uganda Certificate of Education in 1996 and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education in 1998, respectively. Fueling his passion for music, he enrolled in a music, dance, and drama course at Makerere University in Kampala, graduating with a diploma in 2003. Continuing his educational journey, Bobi Wine took on a Bachelor of Laws program at the International University of East Africa.

Career

Bobi Wine initiated his music career in the early 2000s under the moniker BobiRob. Inspired by his admiration for Bob Marley, who shared the name Robert, he adopted a variation of his surname as his stage name. Later, he transitioned to Bobi Wine and released hit singles like Akagoma, Funtula, and Sunda (featuring Ziggy D). These tracks swiftly propelled him to stardom in Uganda, solidifying his status as one of the country’s most popular musicians.

Recognized for his unique fusion of kiganda, reggae, dancehall, and afrobeat, Bobi Wine is celebrated for socially conscious lyrics. Initially leading the Fire Base Crew, he later founded the Ghetto Republic of Uganda. In his 15-year music career, he has released an impressive 70 tracks, earning admiration for his versatility and commitment to spreading positive messages through his music.

Beyond music and politics, Bobi Wine showcases his talent as a film actor. His appearances in various Ugandan films, including Cleopatra Koheirwe‘s 2010 drama film Yogera and the 2015 Twaweza-supported film Situka alongside Hellen Lukoma, attest to his acting skills and versatility on the big screen. Bobi Wine‘s contributions to the Ugandan film industry, notably in films like Divizionz, underscore his acting prowess.

In April 2017, Bobi Wine declared his candidacy for parliament in a by-election for the Kyadondo County East constituency. His grassroots campaign, marked by door-to-door interactions with voters, garnered attention in Uganda and internationally. 

Ultimately, Bobi Wine emerged victorious in the election, triumphing over two opponents with extensive political backgrounds, Sitenda Sebalu of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Apollo Kantinti of the main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

Personal Life

Bobi Wine, at 42, first encountered his wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, while she was a Bweranyangi Ladies’ Senior High School student. After sharing eleven years together, they officially tied the knot in August 2011. The couple has been blessed with four children: Solomon Kampala Nyanzi Kyagulanyi, Shadraq Shilling Mbogo Kyagulanyi, Shalom Namagembe Kyagulanyi, and Suubi Shine Nakaayi Kyagulanyi. 

Their residence is in Magere Village, Wakiso District. Despite Bobi Wine‘s fame and success as a musician and politician, he actively involves his family in tasks such as digging and collecting food, aiming to instil the values of hard work and humble life in his children.

On February 10, 2015, Bobi Wine‘s father passed away after battling diabetes for an extended period. The funeral and vigil honouring the deceased drew hundreds of mourners, including celebrities and notable government officials. A month after the burial ceremony, he released a song titled Paradiso, emphasizing the importance of appreciating one’s parents while they are still alive.
