Biography

Okawa Shaznay (born 29 May 1986) is a fascinating and passionate Nollywood actress and TV personality. 

She is the first Cameroonian from her country to successfully break into Nollywood with her role in a blockbuster movie titled Iyore, starring Rita Dominic and Joseph Benjamin. 

However, Okawa Shaznay gained more prominence with her leading role in a 2016 hit TV series titled Delilah: The Mysterious Case of Delilah Ambrose. 

She even won the Exquisite Lady of the Year (ELOY) award for TV Actress of the year in 2016 for her role in the movie Delilah.

Early Life

Okawa Shaznay was born in Bamenda, North West Province of Cameroon, on 5th May 1986. 

She grew up in her land of birth. She developed interests in performing arts, stage plays, and small film projects in her home country at a very young age. 

The huge influx of Nigerian movies into Cameroon exposed her to the world of Nollywood in the 90s, which she grew to love and admire. 

Education 

Okawa Shaznay finished her secondary school education at Presbyterian Secondary School, Mankon, Bamenda, Cameroon. 

She later moved to the United States in 2005, where she studied and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Texas Southern University in 2009.

Career 

Okawa Shaznay acted in her first movie titled Master DJ, which was produced in Cameroon by Sarabi Pictures in 2004, just before leaving for the United States. 

While in Houston, she linked up with the All Africa Theater group, with whom she moved on the road for two summers performing an adaptation of Chinua Achebe‘s “Things Fall Apart“. 

After that, she performed in a little over 10 African films in the U.S, working alongside some of Nollywood’s top stars. In 2010, Okawa Shaznay began to have a buzz in the African film industry within the US and was cited in the UK blog – Dulce Camer’s 2010 top 50 Cameroonians to watch out for.

Okawa Shaznay later moved back to Africa, where she starred in her first big-screen role in a movie titled Cheaters, which the renowned Frank Rajah Arase directed. Furthermore, she starred in her first movie in Nigeria in 2014 in a hit blockbuster film titled “Iyore,” which was released in cinemas in 2015, starring opposite Nollywood superstars Rita Dominic and Joseph Benjamin. 

Among the few Cameroonian fast-rising acts in African cinema today, she starred in a 2016 TV series titled “Delilah“, playing a leading role.

She also appeared in a 2016 released movie project titled “REFUGEES“, filmed in Ghana in 2012 but completed in Atlanta, the USA, towards the later months of 2013.

Okawa Shaznay has gone on to star in more than 150 movies, including Master DJ, Snatched, Behind the Face, 8th Commandment, The Other Side of Love, X- Class, Governor’s Gift, Blind Pursuit, Sisters at War, The Prince of Barmah, Scars, Refugees, Cheaters Vacation, Perfect Strangers, Delilah, and a host of other interesting films.

Due to their striking resemblance, Okawa Shaznay and Jackie Appiah starred together as a sister in the movie ‘Sisters At War.’ This has prompted many to ask if they are related, but the answer is NO.

Okawa Shaznay is a diligent actress who has deservedly won several awards and recognitions. She was nominated as “Most Promising Actress” at the 2nd annual 2013 GIAMA awards.

In 2014, she won the “Best Supporting Actress Award” nomination at the Golden Icons Academy Movie Awards. The Cameroonian was nominated in 2015 for the Actress of the Year (Africa) Award by the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

Okawa Shaznay was delighted after winning the Exquisite Lady of the Year (ELOY) award for TV Actress of the year in 2016.
