Early life and education
Rauf Aregbesola was born on May 25, 1957, in Ilesa, Osun State, Nigeria.
He grew up with Mr. Aregbesola and Alhaja Saratu Aregbesola and spent much of his childhood in Ikare, present-day Ondo State.
He is Yoruba and has two siblings, Tinuke Aregbesola and Jimi Aregbesola. He follows Islam. Aregbesola attended Akoko Grammar School before studying Mechanical Engineering Technology at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, graduating in 1980.
Career
Rauf Aregbesola began his engineering career after graduating from The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
He worked at Nigerian External Telecommunications, later known as Nigerian Telecommunications Limited, and at Lagos Airport Hotel before establishing Aurora Nigeria Limited, an engineering services company, in 1986.
His early political involvement developed during his university years, where he served as Speaker of the Students’ Parliament and became active in progressive student movements.
Rauf Aregbesola became increasingly involved in pro-democracy activism during the 1990s. Following Nigeria’s return to democratic government in 1999, he served as Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure under Bola Ahmed Tinubu from 1999 to 2007.
He later contested the Osun governorship and eventually became governor in November 2010 after a prolonged legal battle over the 2007 election.
As governor, Aregbesola introduced programmes focused on education, youth employment, agriculture, social welfare, infrastructure, transportation, and school feeding.
His administration launched initiatives including O-YES, O-MEAL, Opon-Imo, O-REAP, and major school construction projects. He served two terms before leaving office in November 2018.
In August 2019, Aregbesola entered the federal cabinet as Minister of Interior, serving until May 2023. His portfolio covered areas including immigration, correctional services, civil defence, and national security-related administration.
In 2025, he left the All Progressives Congress and joined the African Democratic Congress. By 2026, he had become the party’s National Secretary, working alongside National Chairman David Mark.
