Olalekan Jacob Ponle (born May 25, 1989), addressed professionally as Mr. Woodberry, is a Dubai-based social media sensation, entrepreneur, and socialite. 

A Nigerian by birth, he came to the limelight in 2017 due to his affluent lifestyle. He is a close associate of social media personality Hushpuppi.

On June 10, 2020, the long arm of the law caught up with Mr. Woodberry in Dubai. He was apprehended alongside another notorious fraudster, Hushpuppi Abbas, serving an 11-year sentence for a similar crime. 

The two were alleged to have been involved in a massive cyber fraud scheme that caused financial loss and hardship to innocent victims. The authorities relentlessly pursued justice and ensured that these fraudsters faced the full consequences of their actions.

Early Life

Mr. Woodberry was born into the other family of Mr. and Mrs. Ponle on the 25th of May, 1989. He was born in the early ’90s in Lagos City. His parents registered his birth with the name Olalekan Jacob Ponle. 

Woodberry spent his formative years residing in Mainland Lagos, living in a middle-class neighborhood with his parents and siblings. Woodberry is a Yoruba man originally from a Southwestern state in Nigeria. He speaks English, Yoruba, and Pidgin English fluently. 

Education

Growing up in Lagos, Nigeria, Woodberry attended public-run schools for his elementary and secondary education. 

He passed out of high school after six years of study with good grades in his WAEC and NECO exams. Due to financial restrictions, Mr. Woodberry could not pursue a university education. However, he studied briefly at a polytechnic in Southwest Nigeria before emigrating overseas. 

Personal Life

Woodberry worked blue-collar jobs during his late teens to make money and provide for his needs. He also taught himself how to use the computer and began using his computer-related skills to earn extra income. Woodberry has no girlfriend, child and he is not married.

After saving money for some time, he emigrated abroad to pursue greener pastures. He moved to the United Arab Emirates and took up residence in Dubai. He first lived in a shared apartment with some other Nigerians before he got his apartment. 

Woodberry became popular on social media because of his close friendship with fellow Nigerian, Hushpuppi, a notable social media personality based in Dubai. Hushpuppi and Woodberry were known for their flamboyant lifestyle, which they showcased on social media. He flaunted his love for luxury consumer goods. He bought luxurious cars from Rolls-Royce and Maybach to a G-Wagon. He also owns upscale apartments in highbrow neighborhoods in Dubai, Nigeria, and other parts of the world. 

Because of Woodberry‘s lavish spending and display of wealth, many people suspected that he was into internet fraud and was a cyber-criminal.

Arrest By Dubai Police

In June 2020, news broke that the Dubai police had arrested Woodberry alongside Hushpuppi and ten other associates. They were said to have been detained because of their involvement in internet fraud which is informally known in Nigeria as Yahoo Yahoo.

Woodberry and Hushpuppi were arrested for their role in a $435 million scam. The arrest helped the police to recover $40.9 million in cash, 13 luxury cars, 21 computer devices, 47 smartphones, 11 flash drives, and five hard disk drives containing 119,580 fraud files. 

The Dubai police handed Mr. Woodberry and Hushpuppi‘s case to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in July 2020. The duo was extradited to the United States Of America to be trialed for their crimes. They were alleged to have defrauded over 1.9 million victims over the years. 

Plea Bargain

After his extradition to the United States Of America, Mr. Woodberry was trialed separately from Hushpuppi. He was accused of defrauding a US company of about $188,000. He initially pleaded not guilty and was remanded in prison while the court proceedings continued. 

However, Woodberry made a U-turn decision by pleading guilty to the one count of wire fraud at the US District Court for Northern Illinois in April 2023. The judge, Robert Gettleman, accepted Woodberry‘s change of plea in a ruling delivered on the 6th of April, 2023. The judge set the 11th of July 2023 for sentencing after Mr. Woodberry‘s lawyers and US prosecutors entered the plea agreement.
