Michael Oladapo Afolarin (born September 1, 1993) is a creative Nigerian professional actor and model who is known professionally as Mike Afolarin. 

The Lagos-born Nollywood actor has appeared in many successful film projects in the country. 

Mike Afolarin became a household name after he played the lead role of Ishaya Bello in the Netflix Original Drama Series – Far From Home. He also works as an aerial photographer and filmmaker.

Early Life

Mike Afolarin was birthed into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Afolarin on the 1st of September 1993. He was born in a public-run medical center in Mainland Lagos. His parents registered Mike’s birth with the name Michael Oladapo Afolarin. 

Although he was born in Lagos, Mike Afolarin spent the first seven years of his life at his grandparents’ home in Ibadan, Oyo State. After he turned 7, he moved from the ancient city of Ibadan back to Lagos State to live with his parents. 

Mike Afolarin is from a middle-class background and was raised in the Mainland area of Lagos City. He was raised in the Christian faith by his parents and grandparents. Growing up, his grandparents preferred to call him by his native name Oladapo which means “a combination of wealth, success, and prestige has been mixed.”

Mike Afolarin is a Yoruba man who hails from the southwestern state of Oyo. He speaks English, Yoruba, and Pidgin fluently. 

Education

Mike Afolarin began his elementary education at a private-run school in Ibadan, Oyo State. However, he completed his primary school education in Lagos. 

He is an Alumnus of Federal Government College (FGC) Ijanikin. He graduated high school with good grades in his Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

Mike Afolarin bagged a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the University Of Lagos (Unilag) in 2016.

Career

Mike Afolarin‘s foray into acting began when he was cast in a stage play produced on campus. The play titled Magic Time was performed in 2013, giving him his debut acting experience. After this stage play, he became more interested in the Nigerian acting industry and began to appear in more stage plays. 

Mike Afolarin furthered his love for telling stories by going into film production. He decided to become a filmmaker and is the director of two short films – An Interview Story and Peace. He worked on some projects as an associate producer, aerial photographer, and set designer. Notable mentions include Ajuwaya and Couple Of Days. He is the Assistant Director (AD) of the short film – The 3rd Rule.  

In 2018, he worked as an aerial photographer with Director Lord Tanner on the Comprehensive Investment Documentary project for Oyo State Government (OYSG). 

Mike Afolarin‘s breakthrough in the Nollywood industry came after he was cast as one of the lead characters in the 2018 Comedy film Kasala. This was his debut cinema experience, and he played the role of Chikodi. He acted alongside Chimezie Imo, Emeka Nwagbaraocha, and Tomiwa Tegbe.

In 2019, Mike Afolarin received more acting opportunities and appeared in many short films shot in Nigeria. Notable mentions include Blast Not Long After, Fortunately Ridiculous, and Stuck In Deep Mud. He also secured a supporting role in the EbonyLife-produced film – Your Excellency. He acted alongside Nollywood veterans like, Funke Akindele, Akin Lewis, and Shaffy Bello. He also worked with Daniel Etim Effiong and Demola Adedoyin in the Africa Magic TV Series – Brethren. He played the role of Kinto in the series. 

In 2020, he secured a sub-lead role in the Red TV web series Inspector K. He played the lead role of Benjamin in the Biodun Stephen-directed film Penance. Mike Afolarin appeared in two successful feature-length films – The Wait and Soóle – in 2021. He played sub-lead roles in the movie. 

In 2022, he secured a role in the Netflix Naija Original Drama Series Far From Home. Mike Afolarin played the lead role of Ishaya Bello in the series, which launched him into the international limelight.
