The history of female musicians in Nigeria will not be complete without mentioning the award-winning Niniola Apata.

Niniola (born 15 December 1986), as fondly called, is a vocalist, singer, songwriter, and stage performer.

Her talent was noticed at the MTN Project Fame Music competition Season 6 held in 2013.

The prestigious competition which she finished as 3rd runner-up performing with the likes of Limpopo master, Kcee.

Early Life

Niniola hails from the Western region of Nigeria, Ekiti state precisely.

She is a Christian and Yoruba by ethnicity.

She is Simon Apata‘s daughter; a former Brigadier General murdered while she was eight years old. 

Her younger sister is the famous Nigerian singer, Teni with the full name Teniola Apata.

Her father married three wives and produced many children.

Even with a large family, the Apatas were united. Niniola‘s father is a lover of music and would play records every day in their home.

Her mother, however, did not support her decision to become a musician at first but came to terms with her.

Education 

Niniola did her primary education at Apata Memorial School, a military boarding school in Ekiti state founded by her father, Simon Apata.

She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in education, a four-year course at the University of Lagos.

Career

Niniola‘s love for music dated back to her secondary school days. She uses her classmates as her audience and performs to them for free. She was so good that she led the school’s cultural musical group in inter-school and inter-state competitions.

After graduation, Niniola continued to pursue her passion for music which led her to participate in the MTN Project Fame Season 6 edition in 2013. Her performance was week acknowledge as she finished 3rd at the competition. 

Her first single titled, Ibadi, produced by Sarz released in March 2014, became one of the most requested and listened to songs in Nigeria and Africa at large. She went on to make more hits. Gbowode was one, for example.

Soke followed by, Start Over, Shaba, J’ete, Jigi-Jigi, not leaving out Maradona, and Sicker, were all hit singles.

Niniola international appearance has seen her work with Ugandan Eddy Kenzo on his hit song titled, Mbilo Mbilo. This feature won them the award for Best Collaboration at the AFRIMA award in 2016.

After keeping fans in much anticipation, the Nigerian singer released her first album titled, This Is Me, with 13 tracks on 1 November 2017. The album came with an award for Apple Music’s Artist of The Month.

Her success drove her to a music tour in South Africa, and she was immediately contracted to perform at the prestigious South Africa Music Carnival held in February 2018. 

Renowned African DJ Snake couldn’t get over Niniola‘s single, Maradona, which propelled her to collaborate with a remix titled, Maradona Riddim, released on 22 July 2018.

Niniola kept releasing hits, breaking the first female Nigerian artist’s record to surpass 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Niniola headed for her first-ever concert termed The Human Radio, held at the Landmark Event Center Victoria Island Lagos State. The show was a significant success.

The Achievement of Niniola saw her nominated for different awards and categories. Top of all is her nomination for the 2020 Grammy Awards for her contributions in Beyoncé‘s Find Your Way Back, in the Album, Lion King: The Gift.

Aside from that, she was nominated for Africa’s Choice Awards (next rated 2015), Screen Awards (Best female Artist 2015), Nigerian Oscar (Most Promising Artist Of The Year 2015), Ghana Naija ShowBiz Awards (Best Female Acts 2018), and a host of other nominations.

Niniola likes to listen to music in her free time and parties a lot. She loves cooking and teaching as well.

In one of her interviews, she revealed that she would not marry anyone in the entertainment industry.

Her role model includes Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Celine Dion, Beyoncé, and the legendary Cranberries.

Rumor has it that Niniola has a boyfriend that she’s keeping away from the media but this is not verifiable.
