The album’s lead single, R.I.P., peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart. Her second album, Phoenix, was released in 2019 and debuted at number one in the UK.

Early Life & Education

Rita Ora was born to Albanian parents on November 26, 1990, in Pristina, SFR Yugoslavia (modern-day Kosovo). Vera Ora, her mother, is a psychiatrist, while her father, Besnik Sahatçiu, is a pub owner who formerly studied economics. 

Her mother is Catholic, and her father is a nominal Muslim. She considers herself spiritual but not religious. Osman Bajraktari, her maternal grandfather, was the Albanian consul in Russia (then part of the Soviet Union). Besim SahatçiuRita Ora‘s paternal grandpa, was a film and theater director.

Rita Ora has a younger brother, called Don Ora, and an elder sister named Elena Ora. Rita Sahatçiu; surname derives from the Turkish term saatçi, which means “watchmaker”, but her parents later added Ora (ora means ‘time’ in Albanian) to the family surname to make it easier to pronounce.

Her family left Kosovo for political reasons due to the persecution of Albanians that began with Yugoslavia’s collapse. They moved to London, England, when she was a newborn in 1991. Rita Ora grew up in Notting Hill, West London, and attended Sylvia Young Theatre Institution, a performing arts school.

From 2013 to June 2014, Rita Ora dated Scottish DJ Calvin Harris. She started dating American musician Andrew Watt in 2016. They had been dating for two years till September 2018.

Career

Rita Ora began performing at open mic nights throughout London and in her father’s pub on occasion. She auditioned for Eurovision: Your Country Needs You on BBC One in 2008 to be the British contestant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009, but withdrew after a few episodes because she “did not feel ready” and thought “that task wasn’t for her.”

Sarah Stennett, her manager (who has worked with Ellie Goulding, Jessie J, and Conor Maynard), told HitQuarters that she convinced Rita Ora that competing in Eurovision would hurt than help her chances of making it as a solo artist.

Soon after, Rita Ora‘s managers contacted the American label Roc Nation and informed them about her. She was one of Roc Nation’s earliest signees, signing a recording and publishing deal in December 2008.

She appeared in Jay-Z‘s Young Forever music video (2009). After signing, she recorded an album and planned to release it, but her company encouraged her not to, so she began working on other songs for her first album.

Rita Ora posted covers and videos about her debut album on YouTube throughout 2011. The videos piqued the interest of DJ Fresh, who was looking for a female vocalist for his song Hot Right Now at the time.

Rita Ora appeared on the track, which was released on February 12, 2012, and debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart. She was also the opening act for Drake‘s Club Paradise Tour in the United Kingdom in February 2012.
