Adam Silver is the current National Basketball Association (NBA) commissioner. He has been with the NBA since 1992, starting in various roles before becoming chief operating officer and deputy commissioner under David Stern.

Early Life

Born into a Jewish-American family, Silver’s upbringing was influenced by his father, Edward Silver. He was a prominent lawyer focused on labour law and a top partner at the prestigious firm Proskauer Rose.

Growing up in Rye, New York, a suburban area just north of New York City in Westchester County, Silver attended Rye High School, where he completed his education and graduated in 1980.

The environment and values instilled in him during his formative years significantly shaped the person he would later become.

Silver was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Duke University. Following his undergraduate studies, he pursued law and earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1988.

Prior to attending law school, he gained experience as a legislative aide for U.S. Congressman Les AuCoin from Oregon from 1984 to 1985.

After completing his legal education, Silver worked as a law clerk for Judge Kimba Wood of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York from 1988 to 1989.

He then practised law as an associate at the New York law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore, specializing in media and antitrust cases from 1989 to 1992.

Career

Adam Silver has had a long and successful career within the NBA, starting in 1992. He has held various positions within the organization, including President and COO of NBA Entertainment, Senior vice president and COO of NBA Entertainment, NBA Chief of Staff, and Special Assistant to the Commissioner.

Silver was instrumental in managing the NBA’s digital assets and played a key role in creating NBA China.

Throughout his tenure with NBA Entertainment, Silver worked on several notable projects, such as executive producing the IMAX movie Michael Jordan to the Max and the documentary Whatever Happened to Micheal Ray? He also contributed to the production side of films like Like Mike and The Year of the Yao.

In response to the controversy surrounding Donald Sterling’s racist remarks, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver took firm action by stripping Sterling of his ownership of the Clippers and banning him from all team facilities and NBA games.

This punishment was considered one of the harshest ever imposed on a professional sports owner.

Additionally, Silver expressed his support for legalized and regulated sports betting in an op-ed piece published in The New York Times on November 13, 2014.

He emphasized the importance of bringing sports betting out of the underground and into a regulated environment for proper monitoring.

Commissioner Silver took the unprecedented step of suspending the 2019-20 NBA season on March 11, 2020, due to the growing threat of the COVID-19 pandemic.

After careful consideration and planning, it was decided on June 4, 2020, that the season would resume for 22 out of the 30 teams in a specially created NBA Bubble.



This initiative involved a significant $170 million investment to ensure the safety and well-being of all players, coaches, and staff involved in completing the season successfully.

As the regular season ended, Commissioner Silver expressed his satisfaction with how well the bubble system had worked, stating that it exceeded their initial expectations.
