Carlos St. John Phillips (born August 26, 1986), addressed professionally as Saint Jhn (stylized as SAINt JHN; pronounced Saint John), is a renowned Guyanese-American rapper, songwriter, and singer.

He is best known for his deep house remix of Roses from 2016. The remix, which was produced by the talented record producer, Imanbek, made it to US Billboard Hot 100 as the number 5 candidate. The record also racks the charts in Australia, including the Netherlands, Ireland, with New Zealand, and it also made chart entrance in the United Kingdom. 

The song Roses became the lead single for SAINt JHN‘s third studio album, While the World Was Burning, which was released on November 20, 2020. Before this, he released Collection One in 2018 and Ghetto Lenny‘s Love Songs in 2019.

Kanye West, Jidenna, Usher, Hoodie Allen, and Kiesza are among the artists he has written songs for. SAINt JHN is celebrated to be one of the founders of the music collective GØdd Complexx.

He worked with Beyoncé, Wizkid, and Blue Ivy Carter on the Grammy award-winning song, Brown Skin Girl.

Early Life

SAINt JHN grew up in Georgetown, Guyana, after being born in Brooklyn, New York. He was born on the 26th day of August in 1986.

He split his childhood between Guyana and the Brooklyn neighborhood of East New York at three-year intervals. 

SAINt JHN‘s older brother, who used to rap in the neighborhood with friends, inspired him to start making music when he was twelve years old. While residing in Guyana, he wrote his first song in his freshman year of high school.


SAINt JHN performed and wrote under his birth name, Carlos St. John, before adopting the Saint Jhn stage name (or Carlos Saint John). Under his name, he published an EP, The St. John Portfolio, and a mixtape, In Association, in 2010. He was flown to Los Angeles shortly after that.

SAINt JHN wrote songs for Rihanna for two months, but none of his records were accepted. SAINt JHN co-wrote the 2012 Hoodie Allen song “No Interruption” after coming home. 

He wrote songs for Kiesza, Gorgon City, and Nico & Vinz, among others, in the years that followed. He was given a writing credit for the Usher songs “Crash” and “Rivals,” which both appeared on the Hard II Love album in 2016.

In 2016, he also released “1999,” his first song under the alias SAINt JHN. In 2016, he released two more tracks, “Roses” and “Reflex.” He was announced as the opening act for Post Malone during a West Coast tour in October 2016.

Jidenna‘s album, The, was released in February 2017. He also released “Hermes Freestyle,” a new song. SAINt JHN released “I Heard You Got Too Litt Last Night” in February 2018. He debuted the single “Albino Blue” in early March, and his debut album was published on March 30, 2018. 

The album’s already-released songs had accumulated 50 million cumulative streams on various platforms at the time. SAINt JHN was hired by Gucci as a model for its “Guilty” campaign alongside Adesuwa Aighewi while additionally working on music and touring in support of Collection One.

SAINt JHN‘s track Roses reached number one in the Australian and UK singles charts in April 2020, boosted by the release of the Imanbek dance remix. Later, the song garnered two nominations.

Following the popularity of Roses, SAINt JHN was among the acts who performed live for the 2020 Billboard Music Awards in early October 2020. He released the video for the single Gorgeous, the lead singles off his third studio album, While the World Was Burning, on October 23, 2020.

He released the album’s artwork, tracklist, and release date on October 26, 2020. “High School Reunion, Prom,” featuring Lil Uzi Vert, “Monica Lewinsky, Election Year,” featuring DaBaby and A Boogie wit da Hoodie, and “Pray 4 Me,” featuring Kanye West, are among the songs on the album.

The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards held in 2021 awarded him the Best Music Video for Brown Skin Girl (with Beyoncé and Wizkid).
