Early Life

Gbubemi ‘Chef Fregz’ Fregene was the born on the 25th of February 1989 in the Yoruba city of Abeokuta in Ogun State. His parents are Mr and Mrs Fregene.

He hails from Delta State, in South-South Nigeria.

Though born in Abeokuta, he was raised in Benin City, Edo State. He comes from a Christian household.

He started cooking from the age of ten where he would prepare meals for the whole family. By the time he turned sixteen, he had made up his mind to become a Chef.

Education

He obtained his First School Leaving Certificate and West African School Certificate from top private schools in Benin City.

After leaving high school, he enrolled at the private university, Covenant University. He bagged a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Relations and Human Resources Management from the institution. He finished with a second class upper.

In 2010, he obtained a diploma in Cuisine from the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute located in Paris.

Career

Gbubemi ‘Chef Fregz’ Fregene‘s career as a professional chef first began in 2004 when he started an internship in Oakwood Park and Protea Hotel.

In 2007, he did another internship at Oleander Lodge.

The young man decided to set up his own grill/catering business in 2009. He called it DVARD catering service.

After bagging his diploma in Paris, he worked as an intern for three months at the Market Restaurant, Paris. At the completion of his internship, he was offered a full-time job by the management.

He chose to leave his good job behind in Paris and return back to Nigeria to start his own cooking brand. His creative cooking soon won him a lot of clients in Nigeria especially Lagos where he was based.

In order to promote his brand further, he started hosting regular summer style cookouts called Chef Fregz Special.

He offers private chef services to many influential clients in Nigeria. Dolapo Osinbajo the wife of the vice-president is a notable example.

He has travelled around Nigeria on a food tour and some cities in the United States on a food tour. At the moment, he is signed to Temple Management Company.

He has been a judge at several cooking competitions across the country. The most notable one is Knorr Taste Quest.

As Nigeria’s leading celebrity chef, he has collaborated with brands such as EbonyLife TV, DStv, Glenfiddich, Peak Yoghurt, Sparkle Place, My Tangerine Life, YouTube Nigeria, amongst others.

His cooking show, A Taste Of Fregz started airing on EbonyLife TV in December 2020.

In December 2020, he had the honour of cooking for top fashion model and icon, Naomi Campbell.

He is the CEO of the food delivery service, Fregz Á Porter that offers its services to clients across Lagos and Southwest Nigeria.
